Last week, Panama appeared before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva for its second Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

During the review, the Council member States evaluated the status of implementation of recommendations made five years ago and the human rights situation, including in the prevention of torture. Several States recommended that Panama creates its National Preventive Mechanism, as a key measure to improve the conditions in places of detention in the country.
