We began working in Kyrgyzstan in 2004 to help establish a torture prevention body under the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture. Since the country ratified the OPCAT in December 2008, and the prevention body was appointed, we have supported it to become operational and increase its capacity through trainings and workshops. A specific focus has been placed on monitoring of psychiatric detention centres, noted as a particular challenge facing the country.
