Women held in solitary confinement are in a particular situation of vulnerability.

They can suffer different forms of abuse from staff who can use this practice in retaliation for speaking out against mistreatment.

Solitary confinement has severe consequences, it can provoke difficulty to interact socially and also jeopardizes women's relationships with their relatives or children.

This is why its use must be strictly regulated. Solitary confinement shall be used only in exceptional cases as a last resort, and may never exceed 15 consecutive days.

The Bangkok Rules

Rule 22

Punishment by close confinement or disciplinary segregation shall not be applied to pregnant women, women with infants and breastfeeding mothers in prison.
