Strengthening the Maldives NPM - 3rd Workshop In the framework of a year and a half long 'building block approach' programme, a third workshop was organised from 16 - 19 August with the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) of the Maldives and other relevant staff of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to strengthen the NPMs capacity to carry out its mandate effectively, in particular regarding detention monitoring methodology and reporting. Two training visits to juvenile centres were carried out.

La APT ha sido invitada a auspiciar y participar en una actividad organizada por la Cancillería y la Representación para América del Sur del  Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos para debatir de los proyectos de mecanismos nacionales y locales de prevención en Argentina, y más particularmente en la provincia de Buenos Aires.
Which NPM for Togo? Togo ratified the OPCAT on 20 July, following the adoption of the law by the Togolese Parliament on 10 June 2010. On 21-22 July 2010, the APT, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Togo and the Togolese OPCAT Follow-up Committee, is organising a timely seminar to discuss OPCAT implementation and the most appropriate NPM option in Togo.
Bahrain: Safeguards Against Torture The APT, on the invitation of the UPR steering committee of Bahrain and UNDP, has conducted a second workshop for officials, on the prevention of torture in the Kingdom. The workshop, attended by judges and prosecutors, focused on safeguards against torture and ill-treatment. It took place from 21 – 22 June 2010.

Bahraini authorities should immediately look into allegations of torture by four opposition activists who had been held in incommunicado detention for more than two weeks, Human Rights Watch said today. In their formal interrogation sessions with prosecutors, the four contended that their captors had subjected them to torture and degrading treatment.

Iran prosecutor reportedly suspended over detainee deaths

Tehran prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi has been named by multiple Iranian news sources as one of three top judicial officials who were suspended in connection with the torture deaths of three detained protesters, multiple Iranian media outlets reported Monday. The suspensions were announced last week, but the names of the officials had been withheld. According to the media reports, the other two officials are judges whose identities are still unknown.

US military judge rejects Khadr torture claims

US military judge Army Colonel Patrick Parrish rejected claims by Canadian Guantanamo Bay detainee Omar Khadr that his confession was a byproduct of torture, in a ruling released Friday. Khadr's lawyers had argued that his statements were illegally obtained through threats of rape and death by interrogators. Parrish rejected the suppression motion.

Ombudsman forms task force to probe police torture

Philippines - The Office of the Ombudsman on Thursday said it has formed a task force that would investigate the alleged torture of a suspected street robber by a Manila policeman.

Deputy Ombudsman Emilio Gonzalez III formed the fact-finding task force and ordered the team to submit a report and a recommendation to him "as soon as possible."

Outrage in Philippines

Outrage in Philippines over police torture video

The Philippines' independent rights body launched a probe into the national police amid public outrage over a cellphone video showing an officer torturing a naked man.

The graphic video, which ABS-CBN television said it obtained from an unidentified informant, shows the officer in civilian clothes beating the man with what appears to be a stick.
