The practice of presenting an arrested person before a judge during the first hours of detention – have the potential to prevent torture and ill-treatment.

Art speaks to our hearts and helps us see the world from a new perspective. Through their work, artists can connect with the community and share an unequivocal message against torture.

Evidence shows that coercive interviewing, including ill-treatment or the use of torture, do not work.

To help make this happen, together with our partners, we will work to prevent forced confession and incommunicado detention in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand.

The APT, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has launched a new online tool to support governments in Latin American and the Caribbean as they respond to the challenges posed by COVID-19. 

Oversight and transparency of places of detention through unannounced visits is key to eliminate the secrecy that is allowing torture and ill-treatment to happen.

The APT is undertaking a three-year project in Thailand to raise awareness of fundamental safeguards that can reduce the risk of torture.
