Mauritius - OPCAT Situation
Mauritius ratified the OPCAT on 21 June 2005. Following the 2007 visit of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, the National Human Rights Commission was designated as the NPM.
In 2012, a specific NPM law was adopted, creating a specific NPM unit. Two additional bills reforming the Human Rights Commission were also adopted. The NPM unit started to be operational in June 2014.
The SPT conducted a visit to Mauritius in October 2007. The visit report has not been made public yet.
The SPT member who is the SPT Focal Point for Mauritius is available here.
A specific division was established within the National Human Rights Commission of Mauritius to assume the NPM functions.
Annual reports can be found on the NPM's website.
