Preventing torture in Africa: Lessons and experiences from NHRIs (Videos)

National Human Rights Institutions have the mandate to promote and protect human rights. They therefore have a fundamental role to play in the prevention of torture and ill-treatment.

The Network of National Human Rights Institutions in Africa and the Association for the Prevention of Torture have worked to increase the capacity of these institutions to monitor places of detention, investigate cases of torture, train public officials – especially the police – and to work to reduce the overwhelming number of people who are in prison while waiting for a trial.

These short videos show how the National Human Rights Institutions of Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda and Uganda have worked to prevent torture as a result of the project.
