Paraguay NPM calls for closing of Tacumbú prison

In October 2013, close to a year after its creation, the National Preventive Mechanism of Paraguay organised a major public event to raise the awareness of authorities and the general public about its mandate and the need to prevent torture and other forms of ill-treatment in the country’s places of deprivation of liberty.

A few days later, the mechanism published its first special report on detention conditions in Tacumbú, the largest prison in the country. The report echoed the recommendations of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, which visited the prision in 2009 and called for its closure.
