Brasília: Federal Public Prosecutors for the Rights of Citizens

APT was invited to participate at the XVI National Meeting of Federal Public Prosecutors for the Rights of Citizens (XVI Encontro Nacional de Procuradoras e Procuradores dos Direitos do Cidadão), in Brasília, Brazil from 31 August - 01 September 2010. The meeting brought together representatives of the Federal Prosecutors Office for the Rights of Citizens of every state of Brazil. APT participated in the panel “Actions against torture in the system of places of detention in Brazil ” (“O enfrentamento à tortura nos sistemas de detenção do Estado”).

The APT shared its expertise about the prevention of torture as part of a set of actions to combat torture and particularly about the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and its process of implementation in Brazil, as well as to bring elements to reflect upon the role of the Federal Prosecutor’s Office for the Rights of Citizens in implementing and strengthening preventive measures against torture and ill-treatment.

The mandate of the Federal Prosecutors for the Rights of Citizens is to coordinate actions to defend the constitutional rights of all human beings in order to ensure they are respected by public institutions and by governmental entities. The conclusions of debates held in the meeting will be later systematized and incorporated into the Strategic Plan of the Federal Prosecutor Office for the Rights of Citizens as to outline the guidelines and objectives for actions for the upcoming years.
