Another important step to prevent torture in Tunisia

Tuesday, January 8, 2013

The Minister of Human Rights of Tunisia has presented on 3 January 2013 a draft bill establishing a National Body for the Prevention of Torture to the President of the National Constituent Assembly (ANC) for consideration and adoption in an official ceremony.

This is an important step towards the implementation of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT) in Tunisia. Human rights NGOs, including the APT, encourage the ANC to consider and vote this bill as a priority, so that the national prevention mechanism can take up its important tasks as soon as possible.
