Americas - Regional Consultation with the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture

The UN Office of the High Commission for Human Rights is convening a consultation between the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture (SRT), Juan E. Méndez, and state and civil society representatives of selected countries in the Americas.  The Regional Consultation, taking place in Santiago, Chile from 15 to 17 June, aims to increase collaboration, in particular to implement recommendations and other relevant UN mechanisms.

Issues including public security, conditions of detention, preventive detention, administration of justice, violence in detention places and prevention of torture, will be analyzed.  The APT, CELS (Argentina), Conectas (Brazil) and Humanas (Chile) are participating and sponsoring the initiative.
