Truth without torture: a role-play on investigative interviewing

On Thursday 5 October – as a contribution to the OHCHR inter-sessional event on safeguards in places of detention taking place the following day – the Convention against Torture Initiative (CTI) will hold a public event on “Truth without torture – a role-play on investigative interviewing”. The event will take place at the Red Cross Museum at L’Espace Henry Dunant, at 17:00-18:30, followed by a reception to launch a series of online CTI UNCAT Implementation Tools.

The role-play will be carried out by two representatives from the Norwegian police, Superintendent Asbjørn Rachlew and Superintendent Sigurd Sundt, who are experienced in applying investigative interviewing and among the first to introduce the concept in Norway.

The role-play will be followed by inputs from two discussants, Chief Police Commissioner Monica Bonfanti, Geneva (tbc) and Professor of Forensic Psychology Becky Milne, University of Portsmouth, who will share their impressions and own experiences on the application of investigative interviewing.

An open debate will follow. The event

  • will be opened by Ambassador Hasan Kleib, Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the UN in Geneva,
  • with closing remarks by Ambassador Carsten Staur, Permanent Representative of Denmark to the UN in Geneva, an
  • moderated by Ms. Barbara Bernath, Chief of Operations at the Association for the Prevention of Torture.

Co-sponsors of the event include the Permanent Missions of Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, as well as Anti-Torture Initiative, the Association for the Prevention of Torture, and the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights.
