Mauritius - OPCAT Situation

Mauritius ratified the OPCAT in 2005. Following the 2007 visit of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, the National Human Rights Commission was designated as the NPM.

In 2012, a specific NPM law was adopted, creating a specific NPM unit. As of October 2012, the legislation has not entered into force yet. Two additional bills reforming the Human Rights Commission were also adopted.

The 2007 Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture’s report has not been made public yet.

The SPT member Hans Draminsky Petersen is the SPT Focal Point for Mauritius.
