Austria ratified the OPCAT in December 2012.

Austria started to implement the OPCAT before ratifying. The Austrian Ombudsman Board was officially designated as NPM in January 2012, by means of a Federal Law (OPCAT Implementation Act), which includes a reform to the legislation of the Ombuds Institution. The Austrian Ombudsman Board assumed the NPM duties jointly with six regional monitoring Commissions. A Human Rights Advisory Council was also created to advise the overall NPM.

The Austrian NPM started its operations in July 2012.

The SPT member Petros Michaelidis is the SPT Focal Point for Austria.
