Australia - OPCAT Situation

Australia signed the OPCAT in May 2009 but has not yet ratified the treaty. Ratification was recommended unanimously by the Federal Parliament in June 2012.

In February 2017, the Australian government announced its intention to ratify the OPCAT by December 2017.

Consultations are ongoing in the country on the structure of the future NPM.
