Australia - OPCAT Situation

Australia signed the OPCAT in May 2009 but has not yet ratified the treaty. Ratification was recommended unanimously by the Federal Parliament in June 2012.

It is expected that Australia will defer the designation of its National Preventive Mechanism for three years. The nature of the NPM has not yet been decided.
