The election to the UN Committee against Torture was held at the UN Headquarters in Geneva today, among States parties to the Convention. With 14 candidates standing for just five places, the energy was high with candidates and diplomats campaigning until the final moments to try and secure the support of their peers.

The following five candidates were elected:

  • Mr. Claude Heller Rouassant (Mexico)
  • Ms. Felice Gaer (United States of America)
  • Ms. Ana Racu (Moldova)
  • Mr. Abdelwahab Hani (Tunisia)
  • Mr. Sébastien Touzé (France)

The new members will take up their positions in 2016, and will remain on the Committee for a period of four years, after which they may seek re-election.

The APT takes this opportunity to congratulate the new members to the Committee and wish them a very successful term of service.
