On 8th April 2019, the Mauritanian NPM submitted their first annual report to the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. The report covers the period from the establishment of the NPM in June 2016 until December 2017.

The report covers three main pillars: 1) the setting-up of the NPM and the capacity building activities with NPM members and State authorities; 2) the visits conducted by the NPM in all regions and all types of places of detention to introduce the mandate and establish contact with main stakeholders; 3) the initial recommendations made by the NPM to detaining authorities.

As a long-standing strategic partner of the Mauritanian NPM, the APT has accompanied them in the development of their first annual report. “This report will be a key tool to support the implementation of their recommendations and for raising awareness on their mandate”, said Yasmine Shams, Middle East and North Africa Programme Officer.
